Urbana Monument Square Roundabout (US 36 & US 68 Intersection) Project Scheduled to Start May 6th; Public Open House Scheduled for April 30th

(Urbana, OH) – On Monday, May 6, 2019, the City of Urbana’s contractor, R.B. Jergens Contractors, Inc., will start work on the planned improvements to the Monument Square Roundabout at the intersection of US Route 36 and US Route 68.  This project includes safety improvements to the existing roundabout, additional lighting, and water main replacement work.  In addition, this project also encompasses final resurfacing and restriping at the end of the project.  The project is funded with federal Small Cities, Safety, and Urban Resurfacing funds through the Ohio Department of Transportation.  The water main replacement work is funded by a loan and a grant through the Ohio Public Works Commission.  The balance of project funding is being provided by the City of Urbana Capital Improvement funds, including the Stormwater and Water funds.

Project work will commence with the construction of the new truck apron around the base of the existing monument.  Phase 1 of this work is anticipated to last approximately two weeks, and traffic will be maintained.  However, delays are possible during the first phase.  Phases 2-5 will involve the closure of one leg of the square at a time.  For example, the northern leg (North Main Street) between Monument Square and East Court Street is planned to be closed first around May 20, 2019.  Local detours and truck detours will be signed accordingly for each phase.  Phase 6 will involve the milling and repaving of the finished improvements, and this work is anticipated to occur during the overnight hours later this fall.

Prior to the start of construction, the City of Urbana is hosting two Open House meetings that are open to the public.  These meetings will be held on Tuesday, April 30, 2019 at 3:00PM and 7:00PM in the 2nd Floor Training Room of the Urbana Municipal Building at 205 South Main Street.  Residents, interested citizens, business owners, and property owners are encouraged to attend one of these meetings to learn more about the project.

Final project completion date is anticipated by October 31, 2019.  Throughout the project, project updates will be posted to the city’s website: urbanaohio.com and on the city’s Facebook page.  Businesses will be able to remain open as normal during the construction.  Parking will be affected during the different phases of the project, but pedestrian access to businesses will be maintained.
